About
I am an Associate Professor of Public Policy & Management at the Harvard Kennedy School.
My research is about the strategic management of mission-driven organizations: how organizations that pursue a social purpose compete, grow, and hold on to that purpose as they do. I have studied social enterprises, impact investors, B Corporations, and other organizations that answer to more than one goal at once, along with the tensions that follow and the ways organizations manage them. I also study how organizations influence the people who work within them, including what employees will give up to work for a mission and whether they vote.
This research has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Annals, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Public Administration Review, among other outlets.
At HKS I teach “Strategies for Social Impact,” a course on strategy for impact-first organizations across sectors. I am affiliated with the Social Innovation + Change Initiative, the Center for Public Leadership, and the Bloomberg Center for Cities, and I serve on the steering committee of the Non-Market Strategy Research Community.
Before joining Harvard, I was on the faculty of New York University’s Stern School of Business and of INSEAD in Singapore. I received my doctorate in management from Harvard Business School. Before my academic career, I was a consultant with the Bridgespan Group, which advises social sector organizations.
